Your 3rd Place?

Back in the 1980s, sociologist Ray Oldenburg (The Great Good Place) defined the third place as a space in the community

where people spent time, outside of their homes or work.

A place where people want to be, just hang out and spend periods of time communing with one another. Someplace that has a minimum barrier to entry, but also this sense that people are welcome to hang out there and not necessarily be rushed out the door.

A place where you can have a conversation with people who aren’t very much like you, and who you would not run into in the otherwise normal course of your day. It could be a teacher, a nano physicist, a firefighter, a judge or your neighbour. But once the judge’s robes are off, the playing field is always level and the competition friendly.

That’s the glue to social cohesion.

Why not make Elmwood LBC your 3rd Place?

Since 1911

The Elmwood Lawn Bowling Club was established in 1911 in

the Old South neighbourhood of London, Ontario.

Now at 17-1/2 Edward Street, just two blocks west of

Wortley Village between Elmwood Avenue and Bruce Street,

everyone is welcome when the gates are open.

The International Sport of Lawn Bowling

Lawn bowling provides gentle, healthy exercise and competition in a relaxed social atmosphere. It is perhaps the only outdoor sport where men and women, young and old, jocks and ex-loafers, can all compete on an equal footing. It is easy to learn, difficult to be good at.

I think it's a sport for life. You can play the game from the time you can hold a bowl, and for some, well into their 90s.

That's the great thing about this game. You can play at the club level and have a great time, or at the other end of the spectrum you can play internationally and travel the world.
